Overview

The landscape of digital inclusion is changing. In the midst of a global pandemic, the priority was to quickly and effectively respond to the many people across Scotland who were still digitally excluded. Programmes like Connecting Scotland offered fantastic short-term solutions, but it became clear we needed to move past emergency response and think long-term about this critical issue.

For the past nine months, SCVO have been developing a new, place-based approach to digital inclusion. This approach puts people at the heart of service design and involves stakeholders working collaboratively at a local level to tackle digital exclusion. We’re excited to share our learning so far and explore how we can support more places to develop solutions that work for them.

Join us as we showcase this work, offering examples of success and sharing the important lessons we’ve learned by working with a range of partners in different places across Scotland.

Overall aim

This event, led by SCVO’s Digital Inclusion Development Officers Claire Sharp and Jason Railton, will focus on sharing key learning around taking a place-based approach to digital inclusion.

We hope to offer a new perspective on digital inclusion work at a community level, present our plans for the future and discuss how the sector can support Digital Champions in this new way of working.

As part of this event, participants will be the first to receive our interim learning report and will be invited to get in touch if they would like to discuss applying a place-based approach to their own digital inclusion work.

Description

Over an hour and a half, we will present the initial findings of our work and help participants understand how the work was developed, the lessons we’ve learned and what the benefits of working this way have been.

We will hear from Diane Webb, Digital Policy Lead at Renfrewshire Council and a key partner in our work there, on how being a part of this programme has supported improved outcomes for communities and led to exciting new developments.

We’ll be talking about:

  • What does ‘place-based’ mean when we talk about digital inclusion?
  • What are the essential elements of successful place-based digital inclusion work?
  • What are the benefits of working a place-based way?
  • What is next for place-based digital inclusion in Scotland?

With opportunities for participants to ask questions and get involved in the conversation, the event will offer an insight into how the landscape of digital inclusion across Scotland can be better connected and more people-centred.
