Course overview

Want to write content fortraditional or digital platformsbut need to improve your writing skills? This practical online course in copywriting and content writing for online platforms, or for print, will help you gain the skills and confidence to write creative publicity materials.The online course is delivered in 2 parts:

Part 1-Newways of working with words,19 January, 10am - 1pm

Part 2-Workingmagic with words,26 January, 10am - 1pm

Overall course aim

The aim of this 2-part online coursewith Mairi Damerfrom WORD Up Communications is toimprove your content writingskills. In the introductory session, you will be introduced to some fresh new ways of working with words. In the second session you will build on the skills you've started to develop in the introductory session and begin to work on structure, narrative flow, and eye-catching headlines and openers.

Course objectives

Part 1 - New ways of working with words:You will learn how to add va-va voom to written content and use essential tools to improve your content writing skills and learn how to break bad writing habits to create engaging, attention-grabbing wordy content for use online and in print. Exercises include: crafting a personal profile websites and LinkedIn; creating an eye-catching About Us introduction; and a case study - how to bring real people to life.

Part 2 - Working magic with words:You will work on structure, narrative flow, and eye-catchingheadlines and openers, and begin to add colour to written pieces with the inclusion of time, location, real people and senses. You’ll write a longer blog piece and practice adapting and “repurposing" content to promote your piece on social media using some snappy, attractive content. Exercises will include: an introductory paragraph to a newsletter; a blog; and social media posts to promote traffic to your blog.

Who is the course aimed at?

This online course is aimed at anyone who needs to write content for websites or online platforms; it is also aimed at helping improve copywriting skills for those who write promo or publicity material. The course uses tricks and techniques from journalism to encourage lateral thinking and a new approach to writing content. Using practical exercises, the sessions encourage an understanding of your readership, and how to write for them.

There are no formal entry requirements.

Course structure:2x3-hour sessions, whichgives participants the opportunity to improve their content writing through practical exercises and the opportunity for questions and discussion.

Attendance:You must attend both partsof this online course in order to complete it and receive your Certificate ofachievement.
