The Panmure Centre, Kinloch Street, Carnoustie.

Housed in the former Panmure Works Institute with its iconic Italianate tower. This striking building was constructed in 1865 by the owners of the nearby linen and jute factory for the ‘recreation, education and enjoyment’ of its 600 strong workforce.

The new website created by our talented, local IT volunteer went live in December 2024, and contains a lot of helpful information about the Shed https://carnoustiemensshed.org/

The Shed is an inclusive and welcoming organisation, managed by a committee of dedicated local volunteers, and supported by an ever-growing number of both male and female members. It can simply be described as a sociable space where people from all walks of life and with some ‘time on their hands’ come together to participate in enjoyable, practical and communal activities.

The Shed has three key offers for its members:

• A practical space with light industrial workshop areas where members take part in a range of activities, such as woodwork, crafting, gardening or similar • A social space for relaxing with a cuppie, enjoying a blether and making new friends.
• An inclusive, safe and friendly environment where everyone is welcome, accepted, supported and appreciated

Shed members come from a wide range of backgrounds, ages and interests. They attend for many different reasons; to use their skills or learn new ones, share knowledge and expertise, relax and escape, for fun and the banter, make friends, or just to be in a different place that’s not the pub or in front of the TV. Some bring along their own projects or participate in group projects, and others for just the company.

It is an inclusive ‘mixed community model’ for both men, women and wherever possible, welcomes those with a range of support needs that can be accommodated safely in a workshop-type environment. The Shed is an autonomous, self-governing and democratic place, shaped by and for its members.

Qualification for membership is open to any individual aged 18 or over who supports the purposes and activities which the Shed exists to promote. Applications are considered by the Committee using careful judgement and fair discretion; particularly where safety in a light industrial workshop environment must be assessed.

The Shed is well integrated within the community and has many local supporters, stakeholders, partners and customers – Angus Council, schools, businesses and other charities.
