The Scottish Society of Playwrights has been a voluntary membership organisation representing the interests of Scotland's theatre writing community since 1953. We are affiliated to the Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) as one of the smallest unions in Scotland. Our primary purpose is negotiating contracts, professional rates, and representing writers through advocacy work with Creative Scotland, Scottish Government, the Federation of Scottish Theatre, National Theatre of Scotland, and other producing companies in Scotland and beyond. Our membership currently stands at 160, with an elected Council drawn from within the membership. Our current constitution has stood us well for a long time, but with the ever-changing landscape in the culture sector and with us increasingly engaging in arts policy and industrial matters that impact freelancer employment, we are in the process of restructuring as a NonProfit Company Limited by Guarantee to reduce risk to the volunteers who represent us on our Council. We plan to then pursue CIC status, subject to meeting the lobbying test. Our Council will then become a Board when this is in place, hopefully by August. We will continue to be volunteer led, with the Board elected at our annual AGM in the same way the Council always has been.
