As well as its role in terms of worship and gospel, the Church of Scotland is connected closely to Scottish communities and civil society, running a number of social services. Crossreach, formerly the Board of Social Responsibility, now operates under the same charity number. Crossreach provides specialist resources to further the caring work of the Church and aims to identify areas of social need and to guide the Church in pioneering work. The Board runs 39 residential homes for older people across Scotland. In addition, there are residential and day care services for people with alcohol and drug dependency, epilepsy, mental illness, and for homeless people.
