Taigh Chearsabhagh is a vital and vibrant hub of arts and heritage for the islands of Uist, reflecting and celebrating Gaelic language and culture, working with our communities to enrich the lives of our people, offering visitors an inclusive, inspiring, and welcoming environment.
We host museum and gallery spaces, Post Office, shop and café, print and darkroom resource, digital media and television production facilities, and studios. Through the main gallery exhibitions we commission and deliver opportunities, including residencies, to creative practitioners, from Uist and across the world, by invitation and open calls, supporting social engagement, innovation and multidisciplinary experimentation in dialogue with sectors such as health and ecology.
Our vision is a world where culture is open for everyone to experience meaningfully in a way which is relevant to their life. We want to see both heritage and the arts as places for nourishment, learning, and positive personal development; for people to both enjoy and be challenged by. The language and identity of Gaelic culture exists in this world as a lively and healthy community that is well known and celebrated.
Our mission is to celebrate, investigate, share, and engage people with the arts, cultural heritage, and the Gaelic language in order to work towards this future vision. The unique ecology and way of life of the islands of Uist provides the context within which we can offer a vital point of access to culture for our geographic locale and a creative programme with a distinct sense of place. We seek to identify and remove the intangible barriers to accessing this future, to enact real change for our communities both locally and globally. We want to ensure Uist is environmentally and economically viable for future generations.
Our values centre on the belief that art is for everyone and that everyone can feel inspired by art. Creativity and criticality are active spaces for learning and imagining, and it is our responsibility to make these spaces accessible to everyone. We value the innovative power of arts practice and know we can support artists to thrive. We believe in the institutional, personal and community archive as a rich and profound place for expanding understanding and rethinking worldviews. It is our responsibility to widen participation in cultural activities and open out decision making processes about what the future looks like. We value the intangible cultural heritage that exists within Gaelic language and identity, both for exploring the past and the future. We value the health and well-being of human and more-than-human life in our community and environment, knowing we have a unique opportunity to contribute to a flourishing society, land, and sea. We believe in financial justice as a root vehicle for implementing intersectional change and know the value this has in our island context. We believe in Uist as a viable place for communities to live out fulfilled and sustainable lives, with joyful creativity at the core.
