Onward Trust
- Membership number 6385
- Charity registered in Scotland SC028389
The Trust was created to act as an independent guardian of the Edinburgh Prison Visitor Centre, ensuring that it remains in use for the purpose intended by its funder, the Tudor Trust. The Centre is an attractive free standing building, specifically designed for the use of visitors to the prison, which stands just outside the perimeter of HMP Edinburgh. The Onward Trust leases the Centre from Scottish Ministers with a commitment to ensure a range of services for the support of those visiting family members in prison. The focus is on providing a relaxed, welcoming environment for visitors, with access to a range of support services, some of which are provided directly in the Centre. l In practice the day to day role of the Trust is to; - Secure an operator to run the Centre, delivering a range of services agreed with the Trust and the Scottish Prison Service and set out in a Management Agreement; and - Monitor and oversee delivery of the services set out in the Management Agreement It also works with the Operator and the Scottish Prison Services to adapt those services to changing needs.
The current Operator of the Centre is Barnardo's, who have just been reappointed from April 2021 for a further 3 year period, extendable by mutual agreement for a further two years.
The Trust has no employees and all the Trustees give their services pro bono. Its only expenses are its necessary governance costs.
