Earlsferry Town Hall Limited (“ETHL”) was formed in January 2020 to acquire Earlsferry Town Hall from Fife Council by means of a community asset transfer. The acquisition was completed on 31 March 2021. Earlsferry Town Hall is an historic and iconic building situated in the High Street in Earlsferry, in the East Neuk of Fife. It is a beautiful B listed building occupying an important position in a conservation area. The oldest part of the building, the Clock Tower, dates from 1732. The hall is steeped in history and was once the vibrant centre of local community life. However, over the last few decades, the physical state of the hall has deteriorated due to neglect and most recently, by a period of complete closure due to COVID. Our aims & objectives are:1. to restore the fabric of the hall, in an environmentally friendly way, and convert it into a flexible multi-use vibrant community hub, returning it to its former role in the community. 2. to reduce social isolation in the villages of Elie & Earlsferry which operate as one community. It is a popular holiday destination in the summer but suffers from a reduction in population of approx. 75% in the winter months. The feeling of isolation is exacerbated by the fact that a large proportion of houses are owned as second homes which are empty for over 6 months a year. 3. to offer a range of physically and mentally stimulating activities to improve the health and well-being of our ageing population, 46% of our residents are over 65 and of this over 24% are single pensioners.4. to offer support to those in the community suffering hardship and fuel poverty.5. to offer a range of activities within walking distance for the community. Our purchase of the hall was made after almost 4 years of preparatory work undertaken by the Earlsferry Town Hall Steering Group, the predecessor group to ETHL. It consulted widely with the community, engaged Community Enterprise to undertake a community survey and prepare a feasibility study. Architects were also engaged to review the state of the hall and develop plans for its conversion into a community hub. The research, endorsed by a charrette in 2019, demonstrated a strong demand for a community hub and the need, and enthusiasm for, a range of activities delivered within walking distance for our residents.
