The over-arching aim of Relationships Scotland – Family Mediation Highland’s services is to build capacity and resilience of individuals living within the Highland area who have been negatively impacted by separation and family re-structuring. We support people to develop their own solutions to family problems, which will in turn empower them to take greater responsibility for their own, and their family’s well-being. We provide: 1) A child focused mediation service which assists separated parents to reach their own decisions that will work best for their children. Mediation aims to improve communication within family relationships, helps parents reduce conflict, recognise the needs of their children, and work together to effectively co-parent their children whilst living apart. 2) Mediation is also provided between:o parents and their children to improve family life and prevent youth homelessness. o parents and their adult children, particularly where this involves grandchildren. 3) A Children & Young Person’s Counselling Service for youngsters (aged 5 – 18) adversely affected by parental separation to:o help them better understand and come to terms with their changing family situation, their conflicting emotions and enjoy improved family relationshipso Where children are too young, or choose not to engage, indirect support is provided through parents. 4) Contact centre services based in Inverness and Wick to enable children (where appropriate) to re-establish / maintain a relationship with their non-resident parent. We provide supervised contact, supported contact and handovers in situations where it might otherwise not be possible for children to see their non-resident parent. This child-focused facility provides a safe, neutral place where positive relationships can flourish and can help minimise the negative impact that parental conflict can have on children. 5) Parenting Apart workshops to help parents with the process of supporting children through separation. The sessions aim to assist parents to develop insight and understanding of the impact that the parental separation has had on themselves and their children. Our facilitators provide practical information, ideas and strategies on parenting post-separation, and tips for improving communication to help with co-parenting. Our services are delivered either in-person from our Inverness office, or via on-line technology for families where geography, health, finance or social issues prevent them from attending in person. In addition we have a child contact centre based in Wick.
