GEMS Men's Shed, Montrose
- Membership number 6698
- Charity registered in Scotland SC051623
The GEMS Men’s Shed provides a meeting place for members of the local community of any age or background, mostly men, but we also have female members, where they can socialise and work on projects for the community, or on their own hobbies. Predominantly our members are retired, but several have time to fill due to ill health or disability. We are part of the Scottish Men's Shed Association. We are currently based in the Old Ropey, an historic former ropeworks in Montrose, where we have created two workshops, fitted out with tools and machines, with which our members gain skills and confidence, working together on projects both for the community and themselves.Recently completed projects include two outdoor stages, mud kitchens and a tepee for local schools, refurbishment of a bench for the British Legion, planter supports for Montrose Railway station, sixteen large new planters for Blooming Montrose and a bird table, nest boxes, bug hotels and large wooden Christmas decorations for the Susan Carnegie Centre at Stracathro Hospital. We have also created a social room which includes a large communal table, constructed by us from pallets, kitchen area (in progress), TV screen for presentations and a small library. We have erected a greenhouse which was donated to us and established a small garden area, which produced a good crop of vegetables.During lockdown the Shed was closed to general membership, but was used by two selected members taking part in the Scottish Government-sponsored Scotland Cycle Repair Scheme, during which we maintained/repaired bikes for the community. In total, over forty bikes came through the scheme.
