We are based in Kirkcolm a rural village in Dumfries and Galloway . The initiative to create a Community Trust came from the Community Council in 2017 following the publication of a Community Audit . One goal for that Audit was for the Trust to seek to take over the running of our Village Hall which the Council were set to close . We did that on a lease basis prior to considering a Community Asset Transfer, we took the Hall from a 90% loss to break even in the space of a year but also found that the Hall required very considerable renovation to make it viable . Taking advice from DTAS and others we consulted we found this was not financially sustainable or justifiable, so we handed the keys back. This was decided at a public meeting where we also took the decision to pursue the purchase of a smaller building the local shop that had recently closed . This is big enough to provide a hall area for up to 50 people, and unused areas can be converted for use as an office and a shop/cafe . This was purchased with Land Fund support in 2021 and is in the process of being converted into a community hub for the groups that previously used the hall. We have also been successful in a CAT to take over the adjoining car park where thee are assets that will support the income of the Trust and allow the provision of car recharging points and a sola array meeting our green objectives . We have also been successful i obtaining 3 years funding of a part time community worker starting March 1st 2022. Working wiht the Community council it is our objective to work to meet the needs of what is an isolated community where the needs of older people and families are distanced from the support that might be found in a more urban area. We also want to make this a village people wish to visit and boost the income of the village through tourism and increase the employment opportunities for young people ( like our community worker ) who want to stay local.
