Established in 1891, Dogs Trust is the UK's leading canine welfare charity, known for our guarantee to never put down a healthy dog and for our slogan "a dog is for life - not just for Christmas". Our goal is to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome dogs, while working towards the day when all dogs can lead happy lives, free from the threat of unnecessary destruction. To achieve our mission, we rely on the prevention and cure approach. Every year, we care for over 14,000 dogs at our 21 rehoming centres across the UK and Ireland, all staffed with expert Trainers, Behaviourists, and Canine Carers to help them back on their paws and into forever homes. Meanwhile, we use preventative measures that capitalise on our training and behaviour expertise as longer-term solutions. We help existing dog owners by providing easily accessible advice and support through our free, life-time Post Adoption Support for Dogs Trust dogs and low-cost Dog School Classes for any dog. This not only helps prevent the types of behaviours that can lead to relinquishment or unnecessary euthanasia, but also helps dogs and owners build a bond that will lead to a long and happy life together. We also run Be Dog Safe and Bite Prevention workshops for children and families, educate the public on important issues like puppy smuggling, are consulted by governments when making policy changes, and fund long-term research projects in dog welfare. As the lives of people and dogs are strongly interlinked, we use our position as the nation’s leading voice on canine welfare to improve the lives of vulnerable dog owners. Our Freedom Project helps families fleeing domestic abuse by providing a free emergency dog fostering service until they secure a new residence in a safe location, and our Hope Project helps homeless dogs owners with veterinary costs, as well as accessing temporary and permanent accommodation. In Scotland, our experts care for nearly 700 dogs each year through our rehoming centres in Glasgow and West Calder. In an average year we reach 30,000 learners through more than 800 Be Dog Safe and Bite Prevention workshops in 300 schools in Scotland. Our Dog Schools in the Central Belt see an average of 1,600 dogs and 2,700 owners through over 1,600 expert-led classes a year. In 2021, our Freedom Project helped 29 families across Scotland to escape domestic abuse with 75 volunteers fostering 47 dogs. Also last year, our Hope Project supported 30 dogs belonging to people experiencing homelessness in Scotland, while increasing the number of dog-friendly hostels from two to 26! The team also sent out over 100 winter parcels containing treats, leads, coats, and toys to homeless dog owners throughout Scotland. Thanks to our generous supporters, we are helping dogs in need, supporting owners every step of the walk, and creating a better world for dogs in the future.
