Liber8 Lanarkshire is a South Lanarkshire grassroots organisation which began as a Local Council on Alcohol (2004). We are a limited company by guarantee, (331537) and have charitable status, (SC038836). Liber8 delivers a range of services: our initial work of was to provide a proactive and reactive approach to tackling alcohol and substance use problems, this has expanded into providing a diverse range of community-based services. Our mission is to: improve the mental health, wellbeing and the quality of people's lives, with a particular regard to reducing the negative impact of alcohol and substance misuse on the individual, families and communities.Since our re-launch and renaming of our organisation to Liber8 Lanarkshire (Ltd) in 2007 we have made a significant impact supporting and providing a range of services to individuals; young people; specific groups; and families and on the local community. While the initial focus of our services was primarily the delivery of counselling, psychotherapy, and psychosocial interventions, we have since extended our services to include education, prevention, mentoring, advocacy, support, and alternative diversionary activities. The aim of these projects is to improve mental health and wellbeing, achieve community justice, and reduce re-offending and reduce the impact of substance use. We have also provided a range of health and wellbeing programmes and provide topic specific training. Whatever the target population, Liber8 offers a varied and individualistic service, tailored to the individual, led by the service user, their identified needs and aspirations. The ethos of our services is based on the principle of recovery and the recommended Stepped Care approach - beginning with intervention and treatment methods that are the least intensive yet often the most effective. Liber8’s operation is also underpinned by a trauma-informed and ACES-aware approach (Adverse Childhood Experiences). One of our aims is to break the chain between experiencing adversity in early life and using alcohol and substances to cope with subsequent trauma. Liber8 are a nationally recognised counselling service and have held COSCAs national Certificate of Recognition for 12 years, this is testimony to our governance and quality of service, this means we always attract a high level of referrals and significant interest in our volunteer/student placement scheme, which has operated since 2004. Liber8 is a people led organisation, prioritising involvement of participants in both the planning and development of new services, as well as the delivery and evaluation of our activities. When designing and developing a new project, Liber8 utilises the National Standards for Community Engagement. These standards assist us to initially engage, build, and sustain the excellent community relationships that have facilitated our work over the years. However, Liber8 are fortunate to have many members of the community and people with lived experience involved at all levels of our organisation. Most of our Directors, management, staff, and volunteers are from our communities, and many have lived experience. They contribute in many ways - from the identification of gaps in our services, to contributing to the design and development of processes and applications.
