Friends of the Broadway Prestwick

  • Membership number 7492
  • Charity registered in Scotland SC048992

We are a community group dedicated to bringing the former Broadway Cinema in Prestwick into community ownership as an exciting multi-use space.

The group’s business plan is about creating a venue where everyone in Prestwick feels welcome and engaged, a living-room for the town. The Broadway of the future will be a cinema, a café, an inclusive inter-generational social centre, an arts and culture hub, a space for meetings, a place where people can learn new skills, a social enterprise hub, a rehearsal and performance space and the Museum of Scottish Cinemas. The Broadway will be an engine for enhancing the quality and quantity of social interactions in the town.

The community already feel connected to the Broadway and Friends of the Broadway continue to provide pop up cinema events throughout the year including the Prestwick Film Festival. It is an integral part of Prestwick’s cultural and built heritage. Friends of the Broadway Prestwick are working to make the Broadway secure and sustainable so that future generations can feel that connection. Not just to the building but to each other. The Broadway will benefit everyone in the coastal community of Prestwick and beyond, the Museum of Scottish Cinemas will be the only one in Scotland and will become a draw and major attraction for the town. It is envisaged that this will bring a increased footfall to the town which will increase the revenues of other businesses.

The provision of our activities are guided by three core values: to be fair, inclusive, and welcoming. The Broadway’s location at the heart of the community in Prestwick means it is uniquely placed to be a local asset with significant social economic and cultural benefits.

This includes engaging with Bord na Gaidhlig to create a Gaelic inclusive venue for the area and help with the preservation and expansion of learning of the language.

It also benefits SAC Health and social care partnership social isolation and loneliness strategy.

The renovation will help to improve the streetscape of Main St Prestwick as previously highlight in the SAC consultation for Prestwick’s Place Plan.

We are requesting funding to further our mission with a specific, high-profile activity to show the community that ‘the Broadway is back. When the doors open for the first film showing at the Broadway since 1976 the whole community is invited.

This event will be about the Broadway’s ability to boost the quality and quantity of social relationships in Prestwick. An inspirational statement of intent. An important step along the road to realising the full potential of the Broadway as a community hub.
