We are the Viewpark Conservation Group; we are a community-based charity from North Lanarkshire. We are governed by a Board of five Trustees, all of whom are volunteers and residents of Viewpark and our neighbouring communities of Coatbridge and Bellshill. After many years of campaigning for its protection, in 2020, we successfully completed a community buyout of the Historic Douglas Support Estate (Our Glen). Unmanaged for several decades, this community owned 172-acre Estate consists of woodlands, waterways and meadows and is a vital local greenspace in a highly industrial urban area. Since taking ownership of the estate, we have continuously worked to restore it. Most of our activities are conservation based with a focus on biodiversity, supporting local wildlife and the regeneration of local plant species and woodlands. Past activities include litter picking (including the removal of several burnt-out cars, fridge freezers, mattresses and several tonnes of asbestos), tree planting, invasive species management, the creation of nature paths and picnic areas, the creation of a bird hide and viewing areas, the creation of a community orchard and food forest, nature walks, pond dipping and bughouse building. These activities are open to anyone, are free to attend and are organised/carried out by our group of ten dedicated volunteers, with the additional support of people from Viewpark and neighbouring communities.
