Overall aim

The aim of this workshop is to build confidence and practical knowledge around understanding utility bills. By demystifying the language, layout, and charges that appear on gas and electricity bills, the session will empower community practitioners to identify billing errors and understand consumption.

Description

Utility bills can be confusing, and for many, that confusion adds unnecessary stress - especially during a cost-of-living crisis. This interactive and practical workshop will take participants step-by-step through how to read and understand an energy bill, explaining key concepts such as unit rates, standing charges, estimated readings, and tariffs. Attendees will learn how to check for common errors, recognise patterns of high consumption, and identify opportunities for saving money or accessing support schemes.

Designed for community workers, volunteers, and advice providers, the session will use real-life examples and group exercises to make the learning hands-on and engaging. Participants will also receive a simple “bill decoder” handout they can share within their organisations or communities, helping others to understand their own bills and make informed decisions. By the end of the workshop, attendees will feel more confident in supporting individuals to manage their energy costs, challenge inaccurate bills, and take practical steps toward energy awareness and financial wellbeing.
