Never Allowed - Amina Muslim Women's Resource Centre
Amina - The Muslim Women's Resource Centre is an intersectional organisation, based in Scotland, that empowers and supports Muslim and BME women by serving as a vital link between them and the barriers they face everyday.
We envision a world where Muslim and BME women are fulfilling their aspirations to the fullest.
We were pleased to collaborate with Syma Ahmed, BME women's Project Development Officer from Glasgow Women's Library for the 'Never Allowed' film and the report 'Sabr, Silence and Struggles: Extended Family Abuse in Muslim and BME Communities in Scotland', the first report of it's kind in Scotland: https://bit.ly/SabrSilence.
93 BME and Muslim women in Scotland were interviewed about their experiences of extended family abuse and the findings were compiled in a report and a short film, funded by Rosa UK.
The report details the types of abuse that BME and Muslim women experience from their in-laws, the cases highlighted within the report mirror similar patterns of coercive control people experience from their partners or ex-partners. There is no legal recourse for women who have experienced coercive control from their in-laws.
Amina MWRC are campaigning to the Scottish Government to include extended family abuse within domestic abuse legislation.
