Why you should vote for Scottish Autism - Supporting Fathers of Autistic Children within HMP Barlinnie (Scottish Prison Service) for the People’s Choice Award
Scottish Autism is the largest autism-specific charity and service provider in Scotland. We provide a range of services like our national Advice Line, New Struan School, Housing and Outreach support, as well as Day Opportunities. Our Centre for Practice, Policy and Research supports continuous development of practice, undertakes participatory research and campaigns for public policy that upholds the rights and needs of autistic people. Our priority is to ensure autistic voices shape both our own strategies and those of others. Elevate, our training and consultancy services, delivers bespoke autism improvement programmes to organisations and businesses.
In recognition of support required amongst marginalised groups, Scottish Autism, in partnership with HMP Barlinnie, developed and delivered a support programme to fathers of autistic children. This explored autism, communication, sensory processing, stress, wellbeing, nurturing positive relationships and play. Fathers reported an increased understanding of autism, more meaningful ways to connect, communicate and interact through play, and a greater confidence of implementing strategies to support both their children and partners. This partnership programme also highlighted the wider needs of autistic people within the Criminal Justice System.
