Amma Birth Companions
Amma Birth Companions is a Glasgow charity providing pregnancy and birth support to those facing the greatest barriers within maternity care, including women from migrant backgrounds. Founded in 2019 supporting 28 families, Amma worked with over 400 women in 2025/26 through birth and postnatal companionship, peer support, and advocacy. Amma is described as "a truly transformative presence within maternity care for some of the most vulnerable women and families in our communities. Their work isn’t simply beneficial, it’s life-changing."
This year, Amma moved from influencing Scotland's maternity system to co-authoring it, becoming part of how Scotland talks about maternity care. Amma's CEO co-chaired a Scottish Government working group that developed the Action Plan on Racialised Health Inequalities in Maternity Care, now adopted by every NHS Board in Scotland. Amma delivered its first midwifery training to 100+ UWS students — co-produced by women with lived experience. Amma received the NHSGGC Women's & Children's Excellence Award - recognition from within the healthcare system of what Amma's volunteers mean to the women they support and the midwives they work alongside.
