Letham Climate Challenge
Letham Climate Challenge is unique as it represents a community initiative tackling two pressing problems : 1)The challenge of the climate emergency and the excessive amount of waste which is produced by us and its disposal which contributes to global warming 2)The equally challenging problem of sections of our society living in poverty and unable to meet their most basic needs.
Our aims are achieved through the operation of a “Swap Shop”, second-hand Furniture Store, 2 allotment sites, an emergency starter-pack referral scheme, community litter-picking, improvement of local greenspaces, volunteering opportunities and a tool library.
LCC have a 16+ year track-record of being a responsive, respected and deeply appreciated community organisation. We are based in an area of high deprivation doubled with the cost-of-living crisis. By intertwining our aims of climate intervention with anti-poverty measures, we are successfully tackling the stigma attached to second-hand items. We are empowering individuals to upcycle second-hand furniture and borrow tools to be more resilient, we encourage growing-your-own vegetables to be self-sustaining and we involve our community in the improvement of our local area through community litter-picks and community gardening. We diverted almost 60 tonnes from landfill last year.
