Overall aim

The aim of this workshop is to enable individuals and community groups to take action to be better prepared for disruptions. The attendees will be inspired to advise the communities and networks they are part of to be better prepared for disruption by:

• Encouraging community members to create a household plan and kit to the best of their abilities, and to share this advice with their networks and communities

• Working together to support their communities during winter and other challenging situations.

• Knowing where to go for advice and information.

• Building connections and relationships with emergency responders locally to support community action.

Description

Whether we are looking out for people in our neighbourhoods and supporting those who can become more vulnerable during emergencies, or perhaps participating in more coordinated formal action in response to local emergencies, the community sits at the heart of emergency response.

How do emergency situations impact and play out from different perspectives, and how can groups located right in the heart of each community be influential in sharing information about household resilience and planning for emergencies?

We’ll talk about the evolving emergency risks that everyone in Scotland faces and how small achievable actions at household and community level does make a positive difference. As well as hearing from individuals, communities and from emergency responders across Scotland to learn from their experiences, we’ll also be inviting the audience to participate in an emergency scenario and you can think about what your priorities would be from different perspectives.

This workshop will be interactive and during the presentation we’ll learn where to find information about preparing for emergencies and how to create strong connections between communities and the emergency responders.

Attendees will be inspired to make preparations for themselves and their families as well as using their voice and influence within communities to be a catalyst for action, and where possible to coordinate some community activities.
