The Gathering, organised by SCVO, is the largest free voluntary sector event in the UK.

This page gives a round-up of events at the Gathering 2025. Over two days on 4 and 5 February 2025 at the EICC and at the Gathering Extra online on 5 March, more than 4,000 people from the voluntary sector and beyond came together for our busiest Gathering to date.

At the EICC, Delegates enjoyed a busy programme of workshops, seminars, training and networking as well as a packed exhibition featuring more than 70 exhibitors.

The Gathering Extra was hosted by Maddie Stark and Manish Joshi, featuring conversations with special guests from across the sector, live chat among the audience, and curated, recorded content from the Gathering.

Huge thanks to our platinum sponsors Keegan & Pennykid; our gold sponsors Aspen, CCLA and Utility Aid; our partners ACOSVO, EVOC, Social Enterprise Scotland and Volunteer Scotland; and our exhibitors and event hosts. Your support and participation helps to keep the Gathering free to attend for our delegates and we simply couldn't do it without you.

Our aims for the Gathering

We wanted to make the Gathering an unmissable, unique, inspiring and thought-provoking few days where SCVO members and colleagues from across the voluntary sector and beyond could learn and engage in professional development, hear about a range of different topics, network and make connections, inspire and be inspired!

  • We offered a programme of over 70 sessions with diverse topics, speakers and formats to support delegates to engage in learning and development and gain insights, skills, and knowledge relevant to their work
  • We hosted 70+ exhibitors in two different areas of the EICC, offering delegates the opportunity to explore and meet event partners and exhibiting organisations
  • We gave delegates opportunities for professional engagement and space to meet new people and connect with others from the sector and beyond
  • We showed our appreciation for our valued members with an unmissable chance to enter a prize draw to win a professionally-made short film about the work and impact of their organisation. Congratulations to our lucky prize draw winners The Menopause Café Charity!
  • We helped our members stay hydrated with the gift of an exclusive SCVO-branded water bottle as a small token to say thanks for being part of the SCVO membership community
  • It wasn't all work and no play! We helped delegates to relax and have some fun while they were at the Gathering so that they could return to work feeling motivated and refreshed.

We know that hosting a large event has environmental impacts including but not limited to:

  • Power and energy production and consumption
  • Procurement, production, use and circularity of materials
  • Production, creation and waste of food and beverages
  • Transport of delegates, staff and event materials

We are committed to mitigating our environmental impact and to making continual progress and making each year’s Gathering greener.  Here's some information about things we did to help us reduce our carbon footprint, and ways we encouraged our exhibitors, hosts and visitors to play their part too:

  • We chose the EICC as the venue for the Gathering because it has good transport links. 86% of delegates used public transport, walking, cycling or wheeling to get to the venue
  • SCVO only had one paper guide for the Gathering, printed with environmentally friendly paper and bio-degradable ink. We produced minimal printed promotional material and most printed materials were not event-specific to allow them to be used at future events to avoid waste and most of our event information and directional signage was displayed on screens and on re-used and reusable signage around the venue
  • Where possible, we re-used and re-purposed stands, banners and signage from previous events and the main SCVO stand was hired, with the structure to be re-used by other organisations
  • Delegates could recycle waste using recycling bins located around the EICC and we encouraged delegates to prepare for a greener Gathering with pre-event communications encouraging delegates to bring their own reusable cup for tea and coffee (and a 50p discount!), and a water bottle. There were water stations around the venue and at the SCVO stand
  • Our giveaway for SCVO members was an ethically and sustainably produced, re-usable aluminium water bottle to encourage members to move away from single-use plastic water bottles in their daily lives
  • Catering at the venue was exclusively vegetarian (with vegan and non-gluten-containing options) in keeping with our commitment to encourage more plant-based diets
  • 0% of our event waste went to landfill  and cardboard and plastic from the Gathering was baled in Edinburgh and goes to mills in the UK to be re-used
  • We brought our Growing Climate Confidence project to the main SCVO stand and offered delegates the chance to play a fun climate-related game while having the opportunity to chat one-to-one with SCVO's climate project officer and to seek expert advice on taking steps on their journey to net zero
  • 10% of the Gathering programme covered topics relating to the environment, sustainability, the climate crisis and the journey to net zero

Our other commitments

We will work with the EICC again this year to create an event impact report to include information about energy consumption, waste management and plastic use. This will be considered along with our wider feedback and evaluation to help us learn and plan future events.

To help all voluntary sector organisations get to grips with the climate and nature emergencies, we have developed our Growing Climate Confidence resource, a website packed with tips and ideas to help you think beyond the Gathering, and to think about your organisation's role in helping to reduce emissions and engaging your community in the importance of taking steps address the climate and nature emergencies that impact us all.

Accessibility and inclusion continues to be at the forefront of our minds in the decisions we make about the Gathering. We wanted the Gathering 2025 to be accessible, inclusive and enjoyable for everyone and we applied a range of accessibility measures as standard. Here are some of the actions that we took:

  • We continued engaging with sponsors and partners so we could offer the Gathering experience at no cost to delegates, to help to support as many people as possible to take part
  • We warmly invited delegates to tell us about needs in advance and where needed, we followed up with people about their needs so we could aim to meet them as best we could
  • We provided information about access and accessible facilities in a range of formats and offered all information in accessible formats. We provided online and hard copy event and venue information
  • We provided advanced detailed transport and accommodation information and details of car parking/drop-off
  • We welcomed people bringing their own lunch, snacks and refreshments to save on cost
  • We offered a dedicated accessibility and information desk with welcoming and informed staff
  • We made sure that our signage was clear and our staff were easily identifiable staff to provide support
  • We provided induction loops at registration and in all event rooms
  • We limited public address (PA) announcements and ambient music
  • We provide a prayer room, a quiet room, a parenting room, and a work room, in addition to quieter spaces around the venue
  • We provided Gathering exhibitors and event hosts with tips on how to be more accessible and inclusive, stressing our commitment to making the exhibition accessible
  • We provided British Sign Language (BSL) interpreters as standard at the most subscribed events and recorded the events for the Gathering Extra so that as many people as possible could have access to them
  • We tried to make sure that our event programme offered a diverse range of sessions delivered by people from different backgrounds and experiences with a focus on encouraging panel members with lived experience of the topics being discussed to take part
  • We hosted the Gathering Extra online on 5th March as well as the in-person Gathering. It's an online event that featured recorded sessions from the Gathering and special live guests with an SCVO host, in a format that is designed specifically for an online audience.

Some highlights from the Gathering programme

SNP leader and Scotland's First Minister John Swinney kicked off the Gathering with his address to the voluntary sector, followed by Q&A from the panel.

The First Minister has set out four priorities for his government: eradicating child poverty, growing Scotland’s economy, tackling the climate emergency, and improving Scotland’s public services. In this session, SCVO facilitated discussion between the First Minister and the voluntary sector on the sector’s key role in achieving these priorities.

This flagship session shone a light on the ways in which civic society is advancing anti-racism in Scotland. The expert panel focused on two key areas, drawing on their own work and experience:

  • what is the role of civic society in advancing anti-racism within organisations, but also in the communities they support, including challenging far right ideas where they are encountered
  • challenging some of the Scottish exceptionalism that might exist, getting into the history and modern experience of racism here in Scotland

In this session, delegates heard from Trustees, staff, volunteers at Climate Action Strathaven and Strathaven locals about how climate action can enrich the lives of locals rather than constrain them.

The event was a walk-through of the current projects being delivered by Climate Action Strathaven. The session shed light on why some projects succeed and some fail, and the valuable lessons we can learn from both!

Gathering delegates joined us for an inspiring and collaborative event hosted by The Melting Pot (Edinburgh) and University of Strathclyde's Social Innovation Cluster.

This session was designed to empower voluntary sector organisations and social innovators to deepen their impact and navigate the ever-evolving social innovation landscape in Scotland.

This session was also part of the Gathering Extra programme and is available to view for free, online.

This session explored the notion that in social enterprise, the journey to impact is often marked by setbacks and lessons. Fail Forward at the Gathering 2025 offered an open dialogue on embracing failure as a growth tool. Delegates gained practical insights, connected with a resilient community, and left the session empowered to transform setbacks into powerful learning experiences that strengthen their organisations.

This session was also part of the Gathering Extra programme and is available to view for free, online.

The aim of this topical session was to provide a safe space to explore some of the trickier issues that charities and voluntary organisations, and their staff, face when using social media. It can be complex and emotive to navigate these challenges, and our panel provided insight and signposting to support you in making the decisions that are right for your organisation.

This panel session covered a range of topics, including:

  • What would a people and values-centred AI and digital strategy look like?
  • An interactive look at some potential AI use cases, and an exploration of the ethical implications
  • Reflecting on how civil society and voluntary sector organisations can play a more vocal role in shaping the future of AI.

Through listening to thoughts on the voluntary sector from Rt Hon Gordon Brown, delegates had a chance to reflect on the sector's wider role, and their organisation's place within it

Throughout his career, former Prime Minister Gordon Brown has made and influenced economic decisions with people at their heart. His compassion for communities and his understanding of financial reality make him a strong ally for the voluntary sector. During the cost of living crisis, he used his national voice to speak out about the invaluable role of charities, and the financial difficulties they are facing. He has also been instrumental in developing the Multibank model to redistribute surplus essential goods to families in need, giving him a unique perspective on the role of voluntary organisations across Scotland.

It wasn't possible to film Mr Brown's full session at the Gathering but we're working with his team to bring you a short highlight reel of this popular event. Watch this space!

The Gathering exhibition was jam-packed full of over 70 exhibitors who set out their stalls with useful information and demonstrations. The exhibition was bustling with visitors who had the chance to chat with exhibitors, learn new things, exchange ideas, build relationships, ask questions and visit so many different and interesting stands all in one place.

Delegates took part in health walks with Paths for All and guided city tours with Invisible Cities. Nemo Arts brought joy with a choir performance, Taiko drumming and an origami craft table.

We also enjoyed another joyful performance from The Keynotes inclusive choir. Delegates enjoyed Open Aye's inspiring photography display and looked forward to relaxing after a busy day at the Gathering with the natural bath bag that they'd made for themselves with the help of Trellis Scotland.

And we can’t forget the red carpet selfie wall at the main SCVO stand or our roaming photography robot, PixEla who offered delegates the chance for a fun photo to send to themselves as a keepsake!

After the Gathering

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the Gathering 2025 and who contributed to making it such a success.

Thank you to everyone who completed our post-Gathering evaluation, your opinions will help us to shape our plans for what the Gathering and other events might look like in future.

Delegates’ top 5 things about attending the Gathering were:

  3. Learning and professional development opportunities
  4. Diversity of topics and sessions

“It’s a free event, with loads of learning opportunities, huge variety of stalls and its easily accessible. A really great day!”

“I think it’s a really valuable couple of days. At a particularly difficult time in the third sector, it was a much-needed boost and source of joy - there’s also the chance to chat about what we could do differently, how we could address challenges facing.”

“It expands your horizons and is valuable to bring back to the wider team to stimulate discussions and actions.”

We know we didn’t get everything right and that we need to keep working hard to make future events even better. Here are a few things that people told us we could improve on for future:

  • Some people commented that we could improve the quality and availability of catering
  • Some feedback asked for better opportunities to connect with peers through more structured networking
  • Some delegates told us that some session rooms were noisy or crowded, impacting engagement.
