Overall aim

This event has four aims:

• to explain what the Motherhood Penalty is, why its impact affects all of us,, and what we can do to end it;
• to give an overview of Pregnant then Screwed's campaigning work across the UK and in Scotland;
• to demonstrate the approaches and tools PTS use to win hearts and minds, build a community, and campaign at national and devolved government level;
• to show those affected and/or interested how they can get involved.

Description

The Motherhood Penalty is the pay differential between mothers and all other workers due to the discrimination - both covert and open - experienced by these women, and that adversely affects our society as a whole. Pregnant then Screwed, founded by Joeli Brearley after her own experience of maternity discrimination, is a campaigning organisation that believes in a world where women are not judged for the contents of their womb, or the hours they work; a world where stay-at-home parents are valued for their contribution to society, and both parents are enabled to fulfil their potential.

This event will focus on the issues that PTS are working on across the UK, including manifesto pledges on childcare, paternity leave, and more, with a particular focus on its newly launched Scotland work.

In conversation with Sophie Flemig (Chief Executive, Cattanach, PTS funder in Scotland), Joeli Brearley and Carole Erskine will explore what the motherhood penalty is, why we need to solve it, and the benefits of doing so. We hope the event will provide an opportunity for others either working in the area (women/girls, children, families), or affected by the motherhood penalty themselves, to learn more about PTS's work in Scotland and how they can support it.
