- Overall aim
This lively panel conversation aims to use the story of the Lankelly Chase foundation, to frame a wider discussion about wealth, colonialism and capital.
Hosted by Satwat Rehman, CEO of One Parent Families Scotland, and joined on stage by Jess Cordingly, Director of Transition at Lankelly Chase, hear about how they reached the decision to redistribute their assets to drive social justice in a more direct and radical way. Voices from across the Scottish sector will form an informal panel to reflect on this decision, and the questions it raises for other funders and for people working in the Scottish sector.
We aim to stimulate a conversation about values led decisions, and being bold enough to act even though you may not have all the answers.
- Description
Lankelly Chase are a charitable foundation that has distributed grants for over 60 years. The organisation has shifted from addressing the problems caused by injustice, to addressing the causes.
In 2023 the board decided that they could no-longer operate following the traditional philanthropy model, and over the next five years they will dismantle and close Lankelly Chase down, distributing all of their assets including the endowment and all resources. They are joining the Gathering this year to help us all explore what radical change looks like in our own contexts. The decisions that organisations and boards reach as they really grapple with our colonial history might be different, but we are all connected through the interlocking social, climate and economic crises that are playing out in our communities.
