Overall aim

One of the biggest buzzwords in the third sector in 2024 is "co-design," but what is the point of it and how do we know if we're doing it well?

For over two years, YMCA Scotland has been running a co-designed project that aims to establish a national network of pop-up maker spaces for young people with care experience. Presented by the consultants who have built this project and the Project Lead, this session will give an introduction to co-design the big mistakes we made, the wins we are celebrating and how different this project would have been without the voices of young people at the centre of every decision.

This session focuses on practical examples of co-design and includes a panel talk with the consultants who are currently working with YMCA Scotland.

Description

Circuit Scotland is a YMCA Scotland project that is creating pop up maker spaces across Scottish communities, designed to meet the needs of young people who have care-experience. After two years of development with a consultant board made of young people with lived care experience, we want to share what we have learned about co-design, including tools we have developed, the impact of co-design on our organisation and how we would have “got it wrong” had we not followed the co-design process.

What to expect from the session;

  • If co-design is new to you, you will gain an understanding of the basic principals, with leads for where you can learn more and with resources to support your next project.
  • If you are currently running a co-designed project, you will have opportunities to evaluate your own co-design success, share your best practice and ask questions of the consultants on the Circuit project.
  • If you have a leadership or fundraising role within your organisation, this session will give insight into the practical steps YMCA Scotland has taken to support co-design in its project portfolio, with advice for how to structure funding applications and bring partnership organisations along on the journey.

The key themes on the day will include youth work, care experience, accessibility, technology and service design.
