- Overall aim
This event aims to support charity trustees and executives to think strategically about cash reserves and investments, doing so in a way that aligns with mission and values. We will explore practical ways to improve returns on cash reserves, consider risks, articulate values and implement policy.
- Description
This session will explore two key themes:
Firstly, maximising returns on your charity's reserves. For short term reserves, where can charities generate the best returns on cash that needs to remain accessible and flexible? Are the banks sharing the heightened interest rates with you? Do you have to tie your money up to access the best rates? What is the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) and how are charities protected? For longer-term reserves, what is the greatest risk? Are you taking the right risks for your organisation? Do you have a policy in place?
Secondly, as you consider the optimal investments for your organisation, how can you ensure that you invest in line with your mission and values? What are the activities that run counter to your mission that you would wish to avoid? How do restrictions work in practice? Can you have a zero tolerance approach? What do we mean by environmental, social and governance risks? Finally, do charities need to accept lower returns if they have an 'ethical' or 'restricted' portfolio?
Participants can take away helpful definitions, top tips and example policy documents and templates.
