- Overall aim
At Right There, we work with all ages to keep families together. We are one of 4 lead providers of Glasgow Intensive Family Support Service; a collaboration between Glasgow City Health and Social Care Partnership (GCHSCP), Aberlour, Action for Children and Includem.
This collaboration was underpinned by shared training, values, and commitment to strength-based practice, as reflected in the Family Support Framework for Practice.
We will be discussing this innovative approach for providing impactful intensive family support for children and young people at risk of being accommodated and share the challenges and successes along the way.
- Description
GIFSS is a partnership between GCHSCP, and third-sector organisations Aberlour, Action for Children, Includem, and Right There. The service provides intensive family support for young people aged 12+, on the edge of care, to ensure they are supported to remain at home with their family, in their community and to thrive. Support additionally extends to the brothers and sisters of these children and young people, including those younger than 12 years old.
GCHSCP began a major Transformational Change Programme in Children’s Services in response to having the highest numbers of accommodated children in Scotland, with many placed outwith the city disconnected from their networks of family, friends, schools, and community supports.
The result of this transformational change agenda, is a 60% reduction in number of children being accommodated and a 70% reduction in placement move
To achieve this GCHSPC took an innovative approach to commissioning and partnership working across sectors and within the third sector. The Glasgow Intensive Family Support Service (GIFSS) adopts a whole family approach working intensively with children, young people and their carers where there is high risk of family disruption and where, in the absence of such support there is an increased likelihood of children and young people becoming looked after and accommodated by the Local Authority. The GIFSS Framework for Practice aims to help families identify existing strengths, assets and shared goals to address identified worries and risks.
This roundtable is an opportunity to reflect on the learning of GIFSS and to explore the learning in areas of need across Scotland.
