Special Olympics Grampian Area, Special Olympics GB and Inclusive Skating
Special Olympics Grampian (an accredited Special Olympics GB programme) is a non-profit organisation which uses year-round sports training and competition to transform the lives of people with an intellectual (learning) disability in the Aberdeen area.
Special Olympics is much more than a sport organisation – we genuinely transform lives. Through sport we provide opportunities for our athletes to make friends, learn social skills, feel part of a community, increase confidence and self-esteem, realise potential, develop physical fitness and mental well-being, demonstrate courage and experience joy and pride. And above all, for both athletes and their families – to have some FUN!
In partnership with Special Olympics GB and Inclusive Skating, Special Olympics Grampian delivered the first ever Special Olympics GB National Winter Games. Held in Folgaria Italy, the event, predominately delivered by volunteers, provided 5 days of competition for 74 athletes. Alongside the competition (pinnacle of winter sport programme) there were opening, closing and awards ceremonies, come and try events in snowshoeing and other activities. As well as a positive impact on mental and physical health, Athletes reported that taking part increased their independence and ability to socialise/make new friends overcoming isolation and loneliness, giving a sense of freedom and belonging.
