Overall aim

This inspirational exhibition & discussion will look at how participatory photography methods have been used to creatively engage communities around social & environmental issues.

Everyone is capable of taking photos, highlighting concerns, spotlighting potential & generating solutions. Facilitated well, photo walks and workshops have the ability to connect, create & motivate.

Participatory arts can be used for social action research, advocacy or as a form of gentle group therapy.

This seminar will show examples of work from Open Aye's community archive, including projects with Shelter Scotland, Scottish Forestry & Scottish Refugee Council. A particular focus of the seminar will be recent learnings from the 2023 partnership with University of Glasgow GALLANT team, where 50 individuals photo-mapped sustainable living options in the city & instigated greater community collaborations.

This seminar will look at how to use photo-voice methodology to engage communities, connect stakeholders and visualize social impact.

How do people want to tackle the climate emergency?

How can community action enhance mitigation & adaptation strategies?

What insight can people with homeless experiences give policy makers?

How do we improve inclusive access to services & spaces?

Where do investments in recovery projects work best?

These are some of the issues & points of focus of Open Aye photo projects. By photo elicitation, looking at images taken by communities, we will consider how social arts practice can enhance understanding of people and places. This session will platform community responses to such issues, whilst also discussing best practice for running successful social arts projects.

The seminar will consist of presentation with an exhibition of images, printed copies of the illustrated GALLANT guide to sustainable Glasgow and also some handouts with tips on how to run successful photo-voice social action research projects, which connect organizations, communities, researchers & policy makers.
