Event summary and materials

What was covered in your sessions?

Ishani Erasmus presented the research that contributed to Scotland’s International Development Alliance’s latest paper on the Wellbeing and Sustainable Development Bill. Key points included the need for clear definition of terms, a commitment to policy coherence for sustainable development, and consideration of creating a commission which would encompass the proposed future generations commission. Minister Patrick Harvie spoke about the challenges of sustainable economic growth and greenwashing. He discussed his hopes that the third sector will engage with the bill process, and the need for consultation to be accessible and inclusive.

Was there any useful feedback or reflection from the participants?

Participants were keen that the Wellbeing and Sustainable Development Bill drives forward meaningful change in Scotland, and were supportive of the Alliance’s recommendations. They particularly wanted to see measures which were enforceable and that the government would be accountable. The need for a commission with adequate resources and powers was emphasised.
