Civil society is all of the organisations and groups that occupy the space between the household, the state and the private sector. Civil society can play a valuable role in the delivery of services, can empower the poor and marginalized and campaign for policy change. For an effective and accountable state, you need an effective civil society to hold the state to account. The Department for International Development recognises the important role of civil society. It works with over 300 international and UK organisations and has direct and indirect links with thousands of civil society organisations in developing countries.
