For the voluntary sector in general research is a way of gathering information about certain phenomena so that judgements can be made about how ? or whether ? to take action in relation to those phenomena. The topics, type of data collected and methodologies used may vary infinitely but when someone commissions or seeks out a piece of research they are usually looking to be enlightened about something so they can do something about it.
