Inverclyde Community Development Trust
Why you should vote for Inverclyde Community Development Trust for the People’s Choice Award
You should vote for Greenock’s Zero Waste Community Pantry because, since we opened in December 2020, we have redistributed 47 tonnes of nutritious food intended for landfill to the community at affordable prices, tackling food waste and food poverty. Our 9 volunteers have supported over 800 members of the community to shop sustainably, affordably, and with dignity, getting local people involved in tackling food waste and leading more environmentally friendly lives. The Pantry is bringing the community together in unexpected ways: members are doing shops for their elderly neighbours, meeting at our new coffee morning, and even trying plant-based produce!
Our Greenock Zero Waste Community Pantry is a membership-led, volunteer-run shop selling nutritious, affordable, surplus food. We get supermarket food intended for landfill, fresh produce grown by Inverclyde Shed, and reach the community through several local partner organisations. Inverclyde is the most deprived area in Scotland according to the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation. Anyone in Inverclyde can become a member, getting a weekly shop of £10-15 worth of produce for £2.50. The Pantry takes a dignity-centred approach to tackling food waste and food poverty at the same time, sustainably, and has distributed 47 tonnes of food to our community
