The Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations (SCVO) is the national membership organisation for charities, voluntary groups and social enterprises. It works to support, promote and develop a confident, sustainable voluntary sector in Scotland.
Part of SCVO’s work focuses on the Sustainable Development Goals, and as part of Scotland's Sustainable Development Goals Network, aims to champion the goals, end poverty, tackle inequalities and combat climate change.
Scottish Youth Climate Strike (SYCS) is a branch of Fridays for Future (FFF), an inspirational movement of young people demanding system change from governments all over the world. It’s a collective of passionate, determined, young people demanding climate justice from the Scottish government, and they are organising strikes in cities all over Scotland.
To prove its commitment to combating climate change and challenging people to take action, SCVO is giving its staff a half day to march, protest or volunteer in Global Climate Strike events being held across the country on Friday 20 September 2019.
SCVO Chief Executive Anna Fowlie said: “We often focus too much on the immediate; today’s challenges and talking points. Young people are reminding us that the biggest challenge that faces us across the globe is climate change. All of our futures are under threat if we continue to destroy our planet by the way we live our lives. I’m proud that SCVO is supporting this action - nothing is more important.”
