Trustees’ Week 2022 – Join us to inform, inspire, support and celebrate!

Trustees’ Week is all about celebrating the great work of an estimated 250,000 trustees across Scotland and the role they play in governing our charities and voluntary organisations. There’s a packed programme of online and in-person events taking place between 7-11 November across Scotland and the UK.

At SCVO we’re running three free lunchtime webinars to help trustees be the best they can be on their boards. The first, on Tuesday 8 November, will look at the role of trustees in fundraising, their legal and ethical responsibilities, and the rules and regulations they need to follow. With experts from the Chartered Institute of Fundraising, you’ll hear how to ensure your organisation’s approach to fundraising is in keeping with its purpose, values and culture. You’ll get practical hints and tips from trustees and senior leaders involved in fundraising and find out more about the support and resources available.

On Wednesday 9 November we’ll be continuing with our series of webinars looking at the Lifecycle of a Charity. We’ve already covered Setting up a Charity and Running a Charity and during Trustees’ Week we’re going to look at The Trustee Journey with the Cranfield Trust. We’ll find out what excellence looks like for a trustee, and what are the key skills you need to have. You’ll learn how to develop and build those skills, how to build a legacy, and how to know when and how to leave a board.

Our final webinar on Thursday 10 November will address the cost-of-living crisis and the challenges faced by charity trustees in steering their organisations through the post pandemic recovery. Experts from SCVO’s free legal and tax advice services will offer tips on How to Survive and Thrive in Challenging Times. Whether you're struggling to stay afloat, or just need some help to future proof your organisation, come and get support with HR and employment, property, VAT and tax, and mergers and collaborations.

During last year’s Trustees’ Week SCVO focussed on board recruitment and the importance of board diversity. Effective boards need trustees with a wide mix of skills, experience, and backgrounds, so we ran a series of webinars that provided new perspectives, informed voices and support and solutions. A year on, charity boards are still not diverse enough, and don’t reflect the communities they serve. This means our sector is losing out on diverse talent, knowledge and experience which affects good decision making and future sustainability. You can listen again to the webinars and if you have a trustee vacancy why not take up our offer of free advertising on Goodmoves to ensure it reaches a wide audience? During November and December Scotland’s number one third sector recruitment site is offering to advertise your vacancies free of charge. This will help you attract a wider range of talent and move beyond using word of mouth or personal recommendations to find your next trustee.
