This research note considers the definition and measurement of poverty and considers how its scale might be gauged in Scotland. It outlines UK Government and (then) Scottish Executive policies to alleviate poverty, and briefly considers the numerous poverty reduction initiatives in operation throughout Scotland, citing food co-operatives, credit unions, local exchange and trading schemes (LETS) and the work of Poverty Alliance.
