The Lonely Society?
This report examines how modern society has changed the way people connect. It aims to raise awareness of loneliness and its effect on our mental health, detailing steps we can take to reduce isolation. A range of research methods was used to compile the data for the report, including: ? a rapid appraisal of existing literature on loneliness. ? a survey completed by a nationally representative, quota-controlled sample of 2,256 people carried out by Opinium Research LLP; and ? site visits and interviews with stakeholders, including mental health professionals and organisations that provide advice, guidance and services to the general public as well as those at risk of isolation and loneliness. The report puts forward a number of recommendations of interest to the voluntary sector, including a recommendation regarding the commissioning of local services that establish and extend peer support schemes for people at risk of isolation.
