The New Opportunities Fund and rural Scotland: patterns of funding and response to need
In March 2004, the then New Opportunities Fund commissioned the University of Strathclyde to conduct research into how effectively and equitably the Fund?s grant-making has reached rural Scotland. The final report was received in May 2005 and a summary report has recently been published. The researchers have made a series of recommendations that The Big Lottery Fund are now considering. The principal recommendation is for the Fund to adopt a system of rural-proofing that would ensure that concerns around the specific circumstances and capacities of rural and remote communities are taken into account during programme development and management.
