Hosted by Jan Montgomery, this short introductory webinar explores what trauma is and how it can affect people’s lives, including our own and those we support.
You will also be introduced to simple, practical ways to support your own mental wellbeing and that of others, including the 5 Ways to Mental Wellbeing.
This session is designed as an awareness-raising introduction and does not train participants to treat or work therapeutically with trauma.
- Overall course aim
To build understanding and awareness of trauma, helping participants recognise its impact and feel more confident to identify those who need to be referred on to a professional who can help those who are/have experienced trauma.
- Course objectives
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Understand what is meant by trauma
- Recognise how trauma can affect people’s thoughts, feelings and behaviours
- Identify signs that someone may have experienced trauma
- Reflect on the potential impact of trauma in their own lives and work
- Understand when and how to refer someone to appropriate professional support

This webinar is suitable for anyone working or volunteering with people, particularly within community, voluntary or support roles. It is also relevant for individuals interested in developing their understanding of trauma and wellbeing.
No prior knowledge of trauma is required.

There are no formal entry requirements.
Please note that the session will involve gentle discussion of trauma, and participants are encouraged to take part in a way that feels comfortable for them.

- This session takes a sensitive and supportive approach, recognising that some participants may have lived experience of trauma
- The training is not intended to equip participants to deliver trauma interventions or therapy
- Participants are encouraged to look after their own wellbeing during and after the session
