2008 Charity Commission Study into Public Trust and Confidence in Charities

This report presents the findings of the 2008 study into Public Trust and Confidence in Charities, using data collected in a 2005 as a baseline. Although restricted to England & Wales, the survey findings should be of interest to charities in Scotland, as they contradict some recent research reports which claim public confidence in charities to be low. The main OBJECTIVES of the 2008 research were to: o Investigate public trust, confidence and attitudes towards charities in 2008 and changes since 2005; o Explore the key drivers for trust, and by key demographic characteristics; o Benchmark the results for trust in charities against other areas of society METHODOLOGY: A representative survey of 1,008 adults aged 18+ in England and Wales was conducted by telephone. FINDINGS: Since 2005 there has been a slight increase in public trust and confidence. Also, when compared with trust and confidence in a number of other key professions and institutions, trust in charities was higher than in many others, including central or local government, private companies, banks, or social services. Only trust and confidence in doctors and the police was higher than in charities.
