Scottish Household Survey Analytical Topic Report: Volunteering - Research Findings
This paper summarises the findings of a project that investigated the prevalence, type and intensity of volunteering in Scotland based on data gathered through the Scottish Household Survey (SHS) between 1999 and 2006 and focus groups and interviews. The project also involved considering the methodological performance of the volunteering suite of questions in the SHS. It makes a series of recommendations relating to improving the quality of volunteering data gathered in the SHS, raising awareness and promoting the benefits of volunteering, using findings to demonstrate the flexibility of volunteering in terms of time commitment and using findings related to attractions and barriers to volunteering to encourage more people to volunteer. These recommendations are intended to assist the Scottish Government in achieving their policy priorities in relation to volunteering activity.
