Who stood for election at the 2022 AGM?
There were 11 candidates standing for election to 3 positions on the SCVO Board of Trustees.
The successful candidates were:
Barry Sillers
Chairperson, Foundation Scotland
Partnership, knowledge sharing, learning and being collegiate are my cornerstone values.
As the Chairperson of Foundation Scotland, I have current experience of the challenges and opportunities facing the voluntary sector in Scotland.
As a trustee, I understand the value of well-judged and collaboratively developed strategic direction and the progress which can be delivered through good governance, that recognises the need to both support and challenge an organisation, in order to deliver outcomes and value staff.
I believe in bold community ambition and progressive action aligned to the needs and wishes of our citizens. SCVO members support our communities and they do so better together, through progress enhanced by listening, sharing experience and ideas, building on a shared common purpose and common understanding. The lessons of the pandemic showed that collaborative teamwork, preparedness and resilience are key to turning survival into success and I would champion these as an SCVO Trustee.
Gillian Reid-McKee
Assistant Director, Operations, Shelter Scotland
I am an experienced leader, skilled in developing strategy, embedding quality and delivering impact. I bring considerable experience of leading change in the sector, focussing on culture, development and delivery to ensure the organisation I represent has reach, profile and influence. I have demonstrable experience of charitable governance. I work to a Committee structure in Shelter Scotland and I was Carers Trust Scotland Committee Chair. I currently volunteer as a mentor in secondary school.
As a third sector leader, I am inspired by the power of voluntary organisations and the collective impact of the sector. I have been committed throughout my career to date to serving charitable purpose across social justice issues. I would welcome the opportunity to apply my skills and experience to the governance of SCVO in order to play my part in the continued development and strengthening of capacity, skills and visibility of Scotland’s third sector.
Kim Atkinson
CEO, Scottish Sports Association (SSA)
I’m a passionate and experienced leader, CEO, Chair and influential advocate of the sector’s power and potential.
Working across 13 Government teams and respected by all political parties, I bring extensive experience of sharing the member voice in developing policy, shaping strategy and informing national priorities.
As CEO (SSA) and former Chair (ACOSVO), I understand membership organisations. We face considerable challenges and opportunities, and I am convinced that SCVO’s role has never been more needed.
When times are tough, we need to work together; now more than ever. So, I’m keen to play my part to help SCVO, on behalf of members, in:
- Listening to and supporting members;
- Having honest and meaningful dialogue across Government and partners;
- Positioning the sector as an essential and equal partner;
- Championing the sector.
I’m passionate about the potential of SCVO and our members and in truly positioning the voluntary sector as Scotland's First Sector.

I have over 10 years’ experience in marketing, community engagement, digital literacy and as a learning advisor.
I am an experienced Community Engagement Manager with extensive knowledge of the third sector and significant experience of developing content and delivering strategy. I bring strategic leadership, skills audit, research, policy review, community/public engagement, critical thinking and problem solving, providing oversight functions, negotiation, and influencing decisions including knowledge of principles and processes in equity, diversity, and inclusion.
I have followed and admired SCVO and enjoyed the support of SCVO. I would like to apply my skills, expertise, and passion to steer SCVO towards even greater success and help to strengthen the diversity and inclusion strategy within SCVO.
I have served as a trustee, management committee member, panel member, and community councillor. I can communicate with clarity, objectivity, and brevity, articulate views without dominating discussions, and respect the views and feelings of others.
Dave Shea
Scottish National Development Officer, Scottish Community Safety Network (SCSN)
Eight years as a police constable and sergeant, three years as manager of a community-focussed volunteering service, and coordinator of an innovative multi-partner criminal justice research project. BA Hons in art and a diploma in police leadership and management. An active community volunteer and passionate advocate for volunteering and its benefits. A strong interest in the human aspects of justice, rehabilitation and community engagement.
I want to add knowledge, experience and value, to “support, promote and develop a confident, sustainable voluntary sector in Scotland”. I’ll offer my voice to a diverse chorus of trustees, agree where I can, challenge where I should, collaborate and scrutinise.
I’m confident I’ll gain as well as give. The chance to work in partnership with respected peers is rich. I hope to share insight and learning with colleagues and partners, within and beyond SCVO.
Declan Harrigan
CEO, S.M.I.L.E.
I have set up a social enterprise from seed. I have experienced the planning, growth and development of an idea to take it all the way to winning Scottish Charity of the Year in seven years and working towards financial self-sustainability. I consider myself to be a problem-solver and someone who is solution-focused.
I see the true value of the third sector and the impact that it makes on building a better and brighter Scotland. I feel that there can be a really positive impact that someone coming from a medium sized charity can bring to the board, providing a voice to a large number of the voluntary sector.
Emma Connor
Fundraising Manager, Cancer Support Scotland
I am an experienced fundraising leader with demonstrated experience across a variety of charities with various aims and ambitions. I have a tenacious attitude and I believe that anything worth doing is worth doing to the very best of my ability.
I am a natural relationship manager and thrive working with people at any level from CEO, Volunteers, and my peers. I am also experienced in comms, marketing and managing sizeable budgets.
I believe over the past 10 years I have honed and developed my skills and experience within the third sector. After stepping into charity leadership 18 months ago, I have had a keen interest in self-development, and I am now seeking a
Trustee role where I can continue to learn and also support another worthy organisation with my time and expertise. I very much would like to be part of the wonderful SCVO.
James Adams
Director, RNIB Scotland
I have worked in the third sector for 15+ years. As Director of RNIB Scotland, I am acutely aware of the emerging challenges for charities, and their beneficiaries in an increasingly turbulant world.
I have set up a grassroots charity in Govan and been a trustee of several other charitable organisations.
I am committed to ensuring SCVO continues the provision of vital services to members, and acts as a strong sector voice to Government.
The world is fast changing, and the Scottish third sector is being buffeted by turbulent economic, social & political forces. I want to support the excellent staff core at SCVO in continuing to build excellent services for the third sector, working together with our members to face challenges.
As a trustee, I will work to provide clarity of purpose, focussing on what SCVO can do to enhance our members’ reslience, confidence and delivery.
Lesley Ross

I am a strong leader, CIPD Member, with proven track record in outcome-focused delivery. An energetic and talented senior manager with considerable experience of strategy, partnership working and project management.

I am passionate about the third sector and believe that my skills in strategy, partnerships and management would make me a strong candidate. I believe in the work of SCVO and how it is a voice for the third sector at a national and local level. I would bring a voice from an operational perspective linked to my understanding of current policy developments within the Scottish Government, to make a very productive member of the board.

The skills and experience I could bring to the Trustee Board are: good organisation skills, strong sence of responsibility, interpersonal skills, leadership skills, good communication skills, Experience working with a diverse community.
My reasons for wishing to serve on the Trustee Board is to make a positive impact to the community life.
Revd Canon Dr Marion Chatterley
Vice Provost, St Mary’s Cathedral
I have 40+ years’ experience in the voluntary sector, working with client groups including street sleepers, survivors of childhood sexual abuse and people with dependencies. Since 2000 I have been Chaplain to people living with HIV. I bring a working knowledge of the ongoing significant challenges for some of the most excluded people within our communities.
I serve on the Scottish Episcopal Church’s Safeguarding Committee and the Board of Faith in Older People.
I want to share some of my learning from many years interacting with service users. I hope to bring a perspective gained from listening, observing, and seeing what actually makes a difference. I am interested in bringing a distinctive faith communities voice to the table and to ensure that their particular contribution is recognised at the highest level within the Voluntary Sector in Scotland.
