Course overview

Does your place of work need an Emergency First Aider? If so, this in-person course is the one to help meet that need!

If a workplace first aid risk assessment has identified a need for an Emergency First Aider in your workplace, this one-day Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework(SCQF) qualification meets the requirements of the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 and the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1982.

This qualification is regulated in the UK and awarded by First Aid Awards (FAA). FAA are an awarding organisation regulated by Ofqual and SQA Accreditation and the qualification sits on the SCQF. The qualification is delivered, assessed, and quality assured adhering to the Assessment Principles for Regulated First Aid Qualifications, and delivered and assessed in accordance with the current Resuscitation Council UK Guidelines.

On completion of this course you will receive the qualification: Award in Emergency First Aid at Work at SCQF Level 6, which is valid for three years from the date of achievement.

Overall course aim

During this in-person course you will gain the knowledge and skills required to deal with a wide range of workplace first aid situations, and by the end of the day you will have the confidence to be an Emergency First Aider who can provide treatment to casualties in a prompt, safe and effective manner within your place of work.

Course objectives

This classroom based course consists of practical and theoretical activities, and covers a range of subjects including:

  • responsibilities and reporting
  • resuscitation and AED awareness
  • burns
  • assessment of the situation
  • anatomy
  • choking
  • dealing with an unresponsive casualty
  • minor injuries
  • epilepsy
  • basic hygiene in first aid
  • bleeding control
  • shock

The qualification is assessed through practical demonstration of these activities, with oral questions and set scenarios, which you must satisfactorily complete to pass the practical assessment. The trainer will instruct, guide and support you throughout the day within an informal setting, and will be happy to answer any questions you might have.

You will be provided with an emergency first aid at work e-book and a first aid student pack, which includes bandages and face shields to use during the course.

Who is the course aimed at?

This course is for anyone with responsibility for the provision of first aid within a voluntary organisation, charity or social enterprise. It is also suitable for people working within other settings such as voluntary and community groups.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements.

Due to the practical nature of the first aid assessment there are some physical demands, so please wear appropriate clothing.

Learners must be able to get to the floor unaided and successfully demonstrate all required elements of the practical assessment on their own, with the casualty on the floor, as in a real-life situation. If you have any concerns about your ability to complete the physical aspects of the course please get in touch with the training team before booking your place - we'll be happy to work with you on finding the right reasonable adjustment for you.

Other Information

To receive the three year qualification learners must attend the full course and meet the assessment criteria.

There will be a morning and afternoon break, and a longer lunch break, all of which will be based on class discussions and progress.

Lunch and refreshments will be provided - please submit any dietary requirements when booking your place.
