Accredited management and leadership for a changing world

In an exciting partnership, SCVO and Challenges Catalyst are pleased to offer a Chartered Management Institute (CMI) qualification to SCVO member organisations and the voluntary sector. This online course will be delivered via Zoom and consists of four core sessions and two review sessions:

• 9 and 10 May, 10am to 1pm, Management & leadership
• 16 and 17 May, 10am to 1pm, Performance management
• 20 June, 10am to 12pm, Review: management & leadership
• 21 June, 10am to 12pm, Review: performance management

As it is an accredited course it relies on self-led learning with a significant amount of course work and post course tasks, which reflect the level of accreditation: 

• 4,000 word assignments x 2
• 128 total unit time (TUT), which is based on classroom time, your daily workload and job role, and time taken to write the assessments. This TUT is very much dependent on experience and familiarity with the content and also includes the training time and previous experience, for example, someone who has not come across the theory will have to spend more time learning and understanding the topics.  

The aim of the course is to build candidates' skills in management and leadership, provide a space to discuss current practice and issues, and learn from these. Course tutors take a peer-led approach, facilitating the sharing of experience and expertise among learners as well as conveying material based on key management principles and practice.

Candidates will be guided through assessments for the CMI Level 5 Certificate in Management and Leadership in these areas, in order to translate their learning and experience into tangible evidence of their highly skilled leadership. More than 80% of managers said that a CMI qualification is a key part of becoming a professional manager, and transferring their new skills also improved the performance of their team.

Candidates will work towards a Level 5 certificate in Management and Leadership through Chartered Management Institute (CMI) accredited training (Equivalent to SCQF Level 8). The training provides the next step for managers looking to develop their skills and gain professional recognition to aid future career development. The course covers the key principles of Management and Leadership and managing team performance, giving managers a rounded skills set and providing a foundation on which to work towards the CMI diploma and Chartered Manager status.

Principles of leadership practice:

• be able to examine leadership practices within organisations​
• be able to analyse the characteristics of responsible leadership​
• be able to analyse the impact of internal and external factors on leadership practice​
• be able to examine the relationship between management and leadership​
• be able to evaluate how leadership supports the achievement of organisational objectives

Managing team and individual performance:

• be able to identify and agree performance objectives for your team and individuals
• be able to provide advice and guidance to support to improve performance
• be able to apply the organisation’s disciplinary and grievance procedures

Training participants also have access to Management Direct, CMI’s content-rich hub of management learning and resources, for the duration of their learning.

This course is aimed at those who have some experience managing people and leading teams, but wish to improve and consolidate these skills. It is a good next step following our Introduction to people management: essentials for team leaders, supervisors and managers and Adapt and develop your management skills: managing people in the modern world courses, though previous attendance on these courses is not required. The course draws on Chartered Management Institute content, tailoring it to the specific needs of managers working in voluntary sector organisations, charities and other non-profit entities. 

There are no formal entry requirements.

This course relies on self-learning with the 128 total unit time (TUT) based on the classroom time, your daily workload and job role, as it’s all part of the learning process. It also takes into consideration the length of time taken to write the two 4,000 word assignments.
