Who we are

The Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations (SCVO) is a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation. We are a charity registered in Scotland SC003558.  Our registered office is Caledonian Exchange, 19A Canning Street, Edinburgh EH3 8EG.

This privacy notice tells you what data we collect and what we use it for.

What information we collect

You can join an SCVO network using your My SCVO account. When you do, we collect:

  • Your name, email address and organisation (from your My SCVO profile)
  • Any extra information you choose to add to your SCVO networks profile
  • Any content or messages you post on the platform (Circle)
  • Information about how you use the platform (e.g. login frequency, posts, engagement levels)

How we use the information

We use your information to:

  • Set up and manage your account on the online networks platform (Circle)
  • Allow you to take part in discussions and connect with others
  • Email you with relevant updates via SCVO mailing lists (you can unsubscribe at any time)
  • Monitor engagement with the network (e.g. activity levels, popular topics)
  • Remove access to member-only spaces if your organisation is no longer an SCVO member

Content you post in a network is visible to all other network members, so please don’t share confidential or sensitive personal data. Posts remain linked to your name and organisation unless you delete your Circle account.

Legal basis for processing

We process your data under the following lawful bases:

  • Consent – when you join a network or post content
  • Legitimate interest – for managing the platform and improving engagement
  • Contract – if you access networks as part of a member service

Cookies and analytics

My SCVO and Circle use cookies to keep you logged in and help us understand how the platform is being used. You can manage cookies via your browser settings. More information is available in our Cookies policy.


Data retention

We keep your data while you are an active member of the network.

You can leave a network anytime via your My SCVO account.

If you leave or deactivate your profile, we’ll retain historical content (e.g. posts you made, associated with your name) unless you ask for full deletion. You can fully delete your profile on Circle within the profile settings page.

Third parties and data security

Circle acts as a secure data processor on our behalf as part of the provision of the online networks platform.

We don’t sell or trade your data. Data may be transferred or stored outside the UK/EU, but appropriate safeguards are in place.

We use appropriate technical and organisational measures to keep your information safe.

Your rights over your information

By law, you can ask us what information we hold about you, and you can ask us to correct it if it is inaccurate.

You can also ask us to give you a copy of the information and to stop using your information.
