This information is correct as of April 2024. To ensure you are accessing the correct information, please check the Government's information on National Minimum Wage.
The NMW and National Living Wage (NLW) is set by the government. Each year, the Low Pay Commission, an independent body, is tasked with reviewing the current minimum wage rates and proposing future rates. Any updates take effect each April.
Single hourly rates that a worker is entitled to in a pay reference period applies on the first day of that period; for example, if a worker turns 25 on January 25, and their next pay reference period begins on February 1, they will receive the NLW from February 1.
Age | Rate from 1 April 2024 |
---|---|
21 and over | £11.44 an hour |
18-20 | £8.60 an hour |
Under 18 | £6.40 an hour |
Apprentices | £6.40 an hour |
It is important to be aware of important milestones, such as when employees reach the next pay level. Failure to increase a worker's pay when they have a birthday will be a breach of NMW. The same is true for failure to update pay to allow for the annual increase in April.
