Course overview

Confident and effective trustees play a vital role in helping charities thrive. From setting direction and managing risk to overseeing finances and making informed decisions, trustees help ensure organisations can deliver meaningful impact for the people and communities they serve. 

Trustees for impact is a practical series of bite-sized online workshops designed to help current and aspiring trustees build the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to govern effectively. Learn from sector experts, explore real-world challenges and connect with trustees from across Scotland as you develop your understanding of good governance in practice.

By the end of the programme, you'll feel more confident in your role, understand your responsibilities, and be better equipped to support your organisation to thrive.

Course objectives

22 September - Session one: Getting ready to govern

  • Understand the role of a trustee, your legal responsibilities, and what good governance looks like in practice. A great starting point for new and aspiring trustees.

6 October - Session two: Practical financial management

  • Build confidence in charity finances, including budgets, reserves, financial reporting and the questions trustees should be asking.

20 October - Session three: Risk management  

  • Learn how to identify, assess and manage risk, helping your organisation make informed decisions and plan for the future.

3 November - Session four: Board dynamics 

  • Explore board culture, managing conflict, handling difficult conversations and building positive relationships between trustees, staff and volunteers.

17 November - Session five: Good governance and effective decision making 

  • Explore the principles of good governance, effective board behaviours and how trustees can contribute to strong, collective decision making.

This programme is delivered as a cohort, giving you the opportunity to build relationships, network, and learn alongside the same group over time.
