Wow! What a great project to have been involved in. We knew there was a demand for internet support in this area through other short courses that had been run. However, we also knew that people needed a longer time to really gain confidence in using their internet skills in a safe, friendly environment.
We started the sessions in June through initial funding through SCVO digital participation fund and since then it has grown into a great community of learners who learn from each other as much as any of the tutors. Gratefully we have now received further funding to run the sessions until Christmas, with great excitement of looking for sites and apps to help with everything from the Christmas shopping to personalised Christmas cards.
Our tutors are experienced in the field of Adult learning and we also have the expertise of a qualified computer technician who has been invaluable with his knowledge of the technical side of a variety of devices and software, he never knew he would be in such demand. Each week someone has a question on a software download or upgrading to Windows 10!!! Thankfully we have the answers, mostly!
We have also had help from some of the young people in the community who have been excellent in encouraging the learners to try new things and been really supportive and patient when helping those with little knowledge to progress in their confidence.
Genealogy, Dementia information, Music file organisation, shopping, looking for houses, have been a few of the various uses we have been able to help with, as well as setting up emails, SKYPE, and general housekeeping.
ASDA in Tain have been amazing, with their generous use of the café, our learners have no difficulties with access or parking, and the teas and coffees are always a welcome break after a busy morning surfing!
We are really working to sustain this group into the future, with possible support and sponsorship from private companies, and community funding sources.
We have already set up a community learning website where learners can go to find opportunities in the Highland region to learn new skills and where other providers can also share information on opportunities and work together to share best practise and attract future funding.
Everyone has had a great time and made new friends, we look forward to the next phase of sustaining this community of learners and supporting them in the future.
